Starting a boiler division in British Columbia

BC is where the model we point to was built. A division here has to handle two climates, a gas and electric housing mix, and a market where strata buildings and older hydronic homes matter.

British Columbia is the most natural place to start this conversation, because it is where GasBoilers.ca was built as a gas-boiler division for CANRO Heat. Its reach now covers 26+ BC communities. For an owner considering the same move, BC offers real boiler demand but asks for careful targeting: the coast and the Interior behave like two different markets.

We're a marketing and business consulting service based in Vancouver. We don't install or service boilers, and the regulators below are named so you know who to ask, not as compliance advice.

The BC boiler market

BC's boiler work concentrates in older detached homes, character houses, townhouse complexes and strata buildings with central plants. Gas and electricity split the province's heating: Statistics Canada puts natural gas behind the main heating system in 42% of BC households in 2023 and electricity in 36%. That leaves a meaningful, reachable population of gas-heated homes, many with hydronic systems that general HVAC companies prefer not to touch.

Typical buyers a BC boiler division hears from:

  • owners of older Vancouver, Burnaby and Victoria homes with radiators or in-floor heat
  • strata councils and property managers with an ageing boiler plant
  • newer townhouse owners with combi units who need service or replacement
  • Interior homeowners with a long, cold season and a strong preference for a contractor who answers

Climate and seasonality

The southwest coast has mild, wet winters; the Interior and the North are much colder with a longer heating season. That changes the shape of demand. On the coast, boiler work is steady but rarely frantic, and many replacements are planned rather than emergency jobs. In Kelowna, Kamloops or Prince George, the first cold weeks can bring a sharper spike of no-heat calls.

For a division launched in BC, that usually means:

  • a coast campaign built on content and planned-replacement messages, running most of the year
  • an Interior campaign that ramps up in autumn and is ready for emergency calls
  • maintenance offers in late summer, before the heating season begins

Regulators to know

  • Technical Safety BC oversees gas systems, boilers and pressure vessels, among other technologies, and licenses gas contractors.
  • SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification, which now applies to several mechanical trades relevant to a boiler team, including gasfitters and steamfitter/pipefitters.
  • WorkSafeBC covers workers' compensation for your staff.

We link and summarise only. Ask these bodies directly what applies to your team, and plan staffing around their answers with the readiness planning service.

Programs, as of October 2026

BC's incentive programs lean toward heat pumps. The income-qualified CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program changed its requirements for invoices dated from July 6, 2026, narrowing some rebates. For a boiler division, the practical point is that some customers will arrive having already looked at heat pump rebates. Your site should explain, honestly and without dismissing them, when a boiler remains the better fit and when it doesn't. Confirm any program detail with the administrator before mentioning it in ads.

A note on strata work

Strata buildings bring larger, planned jobs, but decisions go through councils and property managers. Pages and follow-up for that audience should explain timelines, quoting and maintenance options in writing, because the person who calls is rarely the person who approves.

How we'd approach a BC launch

  1. Pick one anchor area. For a Lower Mainland company, that might be two or three cities you already serve well, not the whole region.
  2. Decide the brand early. In a crowded market, a separate brand gives the division clearer search focus, as GasBoilers.ca shows, but costs more to establish. The brand structure guide covers the trade-off.
  3. Write for strata and older homes. Pages on central plant replacement and radiator systems tend to attract the jobs general HVAC sites miss.
  4. Split coast and Interior. If you serve both, run separate campaigns and service-area pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Lower Mainland too crowded for a new boiler brand?

It is competitive, but boiler searches are narrower than general furnace or heat pump searches, so a well-built division can stand out. The key is a tight service area and pages that answer boiler questions properly, rather than trying to cover every town from Squamish to Chilliwack on day one.

Do BC rebates help a boiler division?

Mostly indirectly. As of October 2026, the main CleanBC Better Homes programs focus on heat pumps and envelope upgrades, not gas boilers. A division may still meet these programs when customers compare options, so it helps to understand them. Confirm current details with the administrator.

What happened with GasBoilers.ca?

GasBoilers.ca is a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat. Its footprint is 26+ BC communities, and it has earned 5.0★ from 76+ Google reviews. We use it as a reference for structure, not a promise of the same outcome.
